Explore the North Georgia Mountains

The North Georgia Mountains offer some of the best places to explore, relax, learn and enjoy one of the premiere Appalachian areas in the southeast. Northeast GA has a rich heritage filled with Scottish and Irish descendants who have, in many cases, preserved time honored music, traditions, foods and hospitality. If you want to immerse yourself in a culture that still retains some of its authentic heritage tinged with Native American influences, you should plan on exploring the North Georgia Mountains in the near future.

The native peoples of Northeast GA can claim ancestry to Scottish and Irish settlers in the 1700's. Even to this day, their language is still influenced by the Scotch and Irish brogues which were fused together to make what is a distinct Appalachian dialect. Not only was this area influenced by settlers from Ireland and Scotland, but the Native American influence is still apparent through some of the folk lore, preserved Cherokee Indian mounds and family blood lines who claim "kinfolks" who were Indians. The North Georgia mountains are not far from where the Indians were compelled to leave their homeland and travel the Trail of Tears starting from the Great Smokey mountains.

Authentic music is still influenced by the rich heritage as well and many great musicians both famous and little known are products of the mountains of GA. Blue grass music is a definite outgrowth of Scotch-Irish music and instruments such as the guitar, bass fiddle, banjo, mandolin, violin and dobro are common to many native bands. You can often hear a facsimile of the bagpipe sound in some of the traditional mountain arrangements. Vocals may or may not be added and are usually a window dressing for much of the instrumental music played in this genre although some of the harmonies are exceptionally good. Famous people from old timer Bill Anderson to new groups like Union Station with Allison Kraus are famous for their adherence to Appalachian traditional music sounds.

Food is a great indicator of the interesting flavor passed down through generations of Appalachian descendants. You won't find the fancy deserts and small portions of half cooked meats that you will find in a New York upscale restaurant. You will, however, find hearty meats, vegetables and deserts that are preferably cooked from fresh grown produce and fresh slaughtered animals. Some of the pudding deserts and fruit pies still show their heritage from the Old World. Homemade cane syrup and fresh milled rye flour go together as tasty pancakes topped with dark syrup and is a meal straight from the mountain cupboard.

The scenery is breathtaking and you can almost feel what the noble settlers felt when they surveyed the landscape upon arrival and decided to settle there because it reminded them of their distant homeland. Don't miss an opportunity to explore the beautiful North Georgia mountains and spend as much time as possible soaking in the wonderful culture and enjoying a plethora of unique activities for the entire family.

Iron And Wine - Upward Over The Mountain

Iron And Wine - Upward Over The Mountain Tube. Duration : 5.97 Mins.

A wonderfully beautiful song that means so much to me. Lyrics: Mother don't worry, I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed Mother don't worry, I've got some money I saved for the weekend Mother remember being so stern with that girl who was with me? Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body? So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten Sons are like birds, flying upward over the mountain Mother I made it up from the bruise on the floor of this prison Mother I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given Mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to Mother forgive me, I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten Sons could be birds, taken broken up to the mountain Mother don't worry, I've got a coat and some friends on the corner Mother don't worry, she's got a garden we're planting together Mother remember the night that the dog had her pups in the pantry? Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws, And you cried 'til the morning So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain (Picture drawn by me, hope you like it.)

Breedlove Guitar Review - Model AJ250SM

I love jumbo guitars and I've owned several over the years, including a 1993 Guild FJ4-NT that I bought new. In 1997, I had a JLD bridge truss installed. Over the years, my Guild jumbo has developed a smooth mellow tone, with a deep, yet not loud, bass.

Breedlove's AJ250/SM reminds me of my Guild FJ4-NT. Indeed, the two both have solid spruce tops along with mahogany sides and backs. They both have JLD bridge trusses (standard for the Breedlove Jumbo, custom for my Guild) and are simply adorned - simple position markers on the neck, etc. The two also share a similar tone - smooth and mellow.

However, the Guild is more of a strumming guitar, with its larger body, large pickguard, and no cutaway, which makes getting to the upper fretboard difficult - it's a stretch to get beyond the 14th fret. When I play mine, I feel like plucking out Johnny Cash tunes and indeed, there are no shortages of times that I've played "Folsom Prison Blues" on it.

The Breedlove jumbo on the other hand is a fingerpicker or fingerstylist's guitar. It has a slightly shallower body and, also unlike the Guild, the Breedlove does not have a pickguard. It has a soft cutaway, which allows for easy access all the way up to the 18th fret. I have to reach a little to get to the 19th and 20th frets on the Breedlove, whereas with the Guild I have to bring my thumb out from behind the neck to reach that high.

The Breed love Guitars AJ250/SM has a balanced sound, with a deep yet quiet bass. Other notable features include Fishman Classic 4 electronics, Grover tuners and a satin finish.

Kefalonia Greece - The Amazing Setting of a Hollywood Movie

Kefalonia Ionian is one of the famous islands of Greece not only because of its lush green nature and wonderful beaches, but as it has also been the beautiful backdrop of the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

The film was shot in the beautiful locales of this Greek island with famous Hollywood actors, such as Penelope Cruz, Nicholas Cage and Irene Papas to mention a few. The plot revolves around the two main characters of the film: the Italian Army officer, Captain Antonio Corelli enacted by Nicholas Cage and the beautiful daughter of a local doctor, played by Penelope Cruz.

It is basically a war movie and shows clips of the Second World War, when Italy allies with Nazi Germany and forcibly occupies Greece. A certain Italian officer is then sent for administrative purposes to the Greek island and he slowly gets attracted to the daughter of the local physician, Pelagia, who is engaged to a Greek rebellion.

Later on, the plot thickens when Italy loses the war. Amidst a pending German invasion, the story shows the emotions that the characters feel to each other and to their countries, the sacrifices they bear and their eternal devotion to the cause of humanity.

Kefalonia has, since the movie was filmed, become known to the whole world and even more people come to discover it. This movie had indeed created a drastic effect on the tourism industry of this beautiful Greek island.

If you travel around it, you will certainly recognize the landscapes shown in the movie, such as Antisamos beach, Sami village and Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. The scenes when the Italian army marched in Argostoli were shot in the yard of a Kefalonia hotel, however many other scenes were shot all over Kefalonia and depict its beauty: the pure nature, the traditional villages, the scenic beaches, the sunny climate and the friendly people. Kefalonia island was indeed the perfect landscape for the setting of this movie.

How To Convert A Sanchez Travel Guitar To A Lap Steel

There is something addictive about guitar playing that just seems to suck you in further than you meant to go...a bit like sex, rum, red wine, chocolate someone else's wife, luscious things that don't seem very good for you...the only thing is, guitars, especially acoustic lap steel guitars of the Weissenborn kind, are actually positively good, very good for you...truly!

You are doing something constructive, quite unlike slugging back half a bottle of Cabernet shiraz in one go, or scoffing down a whole packet of M and M's when you girlfriend isn't around....no, guitar playing is very good for your mental health, disposition, relaxation and manual dexterity( oh..go on, I had to sling that one in...NO?)

Well, anyway since I have relented to the demons in my head that whispered into my shellike ear in the middle of the dark hours, that I simply would go mad if I didn't get one, and pretty damn soon at that, I relented and the upshot of that is to all you would-be phsychologists out there...hey I feel pretty damn good now...much better than I was!
Ever since that fateful night when I was introduced to the great sound of David Churchill's lovely Lap steel that he made for the Devil's advocate of these black arts, Mr. Jeff Lang..I was hooked. I needed to get one and couldn't rest until I did. I sulked and whined, pouted and flounced around all the guitar shops always going away frustrated, empty handed and in a bad mood..." Three Frickin Grand?...how in hell's name can I find that kinda dough?" Well, the truth was I couldn't. I tossed and turned tirelessly in the dark blue hour of pre-dawn hatching my plot.

Then, in a flash of blinding inspiration, I had the answer ( which should have entered my numbskull weeks before) I would convert one of my collection! Aha..sheer genius. But which little innocent would go under the knife in the blinding glare of my headband camping light?
The Sanchez travel guitar of course..it's fate was sealed. It had all the right qualifications, a lovely long neck, strongly built, is it ever! I had bought it intending to use it as, well, a travel guitar, but somehow my beautiful Baby Grand Taylor and I seem to never be able to be apart fo too long, but that's another story!!!!

The more I thought about it, the solution seemed more practical... Why did it take so long for that penny to drop ( the lights are on Buddy, but no-one's at home....Der) What would I need to allow the operation to succeed? The list was made... A new nut and a new saddle, both out of Macarta bone a great synthetic bone substitute with good acoustic qualities, some resonator type strings .. I dashed off to get some John Pearse Nickel wound G tuning strings for resophonic and steel guitars. What next?

Er, ummm, That's it? no there must be more...nope.Yup, a tailpiece small enough, a mandolin one would do!

Oh, yeah, numbskull, a cool, shiny steel bar to play the dang thing with!!! Ok, I resigned myself to the fact that after the conversion was done and when I tuned up again the patients neck would bend horribly and snap like a carrot....we would see!! It would be a sacrifice to the Gods of the Devil's music, I consoled myself to that event!
The day came... a clean sheet was under the patient, the gruesome tools needed lay in a shiny pile - files, hacksaws, sandpaper, needle files and a small vice. It's strings were stripped away, a hand inserted through its only orifice, to check the internals to see if they could cope with the operation, an executive surgeon's decision made and we were away. The job was so gruesome so horrible that I had to anethesize myself with copious drafts of medicinal rum from a handy container, namely a glass.

The nut was removed, and the new one measured up and transplanted. Likewise the saddle, a deeper slot painlessly gouged out... what next? The next thing was to put the new tailpiece that would support the strings to the back of the guitar. A mandolin tailpiece was chosen, neat, petite and just the right size! Then almost in a flash, it was over! so quickly!

The new strings were anxiously replaced, God they looked too thick!!!! They were tuned to a low open D tuning ( DADFsharpAD )and anxious moments ensued as the guitar took up the new strains....would anything snap? No, it didn't and still ahsn't three months later! It has worked really well and bit by bit, the new style of playing has been tried and tested. Luckily enough, its still small enough to play like a proper guitar and when I'm fed up with trying to play it oacross my lap( a very unnatural pose for a chap who has played normally for twenty years) I shift it up and play it like I know how with a brass little finger slide............I have joined the exalted throng and I feel not like a leper!

I also recently completed the building of a proper Weissenborn from Australian Maple and the telling of that epic adventure can be found elsewhere on http://www.ezinearticles.com. I will be putting a piccy of my little Sanchez which sounds fantastic and twice as loud as it used to be, on my new site http://www.buildaweissenborn.com

My addiction is complete.. There is no hope for me and counselling would fall on deaf ears!
No wonder Johnny Depp owns about seven of them! a cool dude.....good onya Johnny boy!

Baila - The Popular Srilankan Music of the Islands

Baila term was derived from Portuguese verb 'bailar' that means 'to dance'. The Father of Baila in Srilanka was known as Wally Bastian. Baila was established by Portuguese traders in the 16th century during the Sri Lanka's colonial rule. The original community of Baila singers are the mixed community of Portuguese traders, slaves they brought from the western coast of Africa, and native Sri Lankan communities. Baila music is a cultural interchange between local musicians and Portuguese music influence.

Baila is influenced by eastern and western European instruments and rhythms found in Spain and northern European fork music. Baila adapted the 6/8 'kaffirhina' rhythms with Sinhalese lyrics. In the 1970s, Baila grew out of musician M.S. Fernando and Maxwell Mendis. Baila music had grown to a recognized and respected popular music style in Srilanka. Kaffirhina music style also referred as '6/8 time' uses bongo drums, violin, mandolin, box guitar and honky tonk piano and also uses electric guitar, synthesizer/workstation keyboards, octapad and drum kit.

Baila music, though popular as a folk art for centuries in the country was introduced to Sri Lanka's mainstream during the early years of the 1960s when singer Wally Bastian (who was also a police officer), began adapting the 6/8 'kaffirhina' rhythms to accommodate Sinhalese lyrics. By the 1970s, owing largely to the contributions of musicians MS Fernando and Maxwell Mendis, Baila had grown to become a recognized (and respected) style of Sri Lankan popular music.

Baila music is very popular in Srilanka and often heard during parties, school reunions, hotel concerts, charity dinner dances, and weddings. Often Baila adapted themes derived from Srilankan colonial history and folklore.

There are two sub-genres of Srilankan Baila music such as Chorus Baila (typical baila songs) and Waada Baila (typically a contest between several Baila singers). In Waada Baila contestants are given topics by a judge and they compose during a few minutes the lyrics for the specific Baila rhythm. Marks are given based on meaningfulness, smooth flow, and rhythm.

Ashokan Farewell -- mandolin

Ashokan Farewell -- mandolin Tube. Duration : 2.57 Mins.

This is a try at the great "modern classic" fiddle tune by Jay Unger entitled Ashokan Farewell -- made mega famous in the Burn's Civil War documentary. It IS a lovely waltz tune. I thought it was a fine tune for developing double stops too. I gave up on the Logitec webcam for creating videos and I gave up on their useless customer support team too! snarl! So this recording was made with an RCA Small Wonder video camera -- its much better I think -- and does a great job for such an inexpensive item. Played here in the key of D major on a 1920 Gibson F-2 mandolin with D'Aquisto M-21 phosphor bronze strings and a Wegen TF-120 pick. I created the guitar track using TablEdit software.

Alison Krauss I Know Who Holds Tomorrow Gospel Music CD Review

Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better I Know Who Holds Tomorrow gets. I Know Who Holds Tomorrow simply stated is one of Alison Krauss's best CDs to date.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you've got one of Alison Krauss's most impressive releases ever.

If you're even mildly into Gospel music you'll enjoy this CD. Overall I Know Who Holds Tomorrow is an outstanding release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 1 - Walk Over God's Heaven, track 2 - Will There Be Any Stars?, and track 7 - Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 11 - Loves Me Like A Rock. Great track!

Review of Breedlove Mandolin Quartz With Sunburst Finish

Breedlove Guitar Company makes incredible archtop mandolins in three different body styles - O, F, and Breedlove's unique F shape. Each model is available with either an oval soundhole and X bracing, or f-holes and tone bar bracing.

Among Breedlove's mandolin offerings is the Quartz OF model, which is a smooth, teardrop-shaped instrument with f holes and tone bar bracing, which results in increased projection. The satin sunburn finish is a deep, rich one that highlights, rather than covers up, the inherent beauty of the solid spruce top and solid flamed maple back and sides. Breedlove's Quartz OF also lacks binding as well as many other appointments, thus providing it a straightforward appearance at a great value.

One of my favorite aspects of Breedlove mandolins is the generous string spacing provided. I have large fingers, and as a result, many mandolin necks are too narrow for me to play even halfway decently. Breedloves, on the other hand, neatly fit into my hand and I do not find myself awkwardly squeezing my hand together to try to get a chord in. The Quartz OF has a clean, pure sound to with the bell like ring associated with flamed maple.

Features include a single piece maple neck, solid sitka spruce top, solid western maple back/sides, tone bar bracing, f-holes, twenty frets, Tusq nut, saga tuners, radiused ebony fingerboard with pearl dot position markers, ebony headstock overlay, and a deluxe hardshell case that produces a snug fit so that your mandolin is secure and not moving around inside the case.

Shania Twain Come On Over Contemporary Country Music CD Review

Come On Over is the latest release from Contemporary Country Sensation Shania Twain, and is another great one from this talented musician.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

One of the nicer things about a CD like this is with this level of talent even if Contemporary Country isn't your favorite genre you still can't help but appreciate the greatness of the artist.

Listen to this CD and I believe you'll find there's not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and Shania Twain is clearly in top form. So much so that if you're even mildly into Contemporary Country music you'll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 5 - From This Moment On, track 10 - You're Still The One, and track 14 - I Won't Leave You Lonely

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 12 - That Don't Impress Me Much. Outstanding!

6. Come On Over

10. You're Still The One

11. Honey, I'm Home

12. That Don't Impress Me Much

13. Black Eyes, Blue Tears

14. I Won't Leave You Lonely

Chris LeDoux Cowboy Contemporary Country Music CD Review

I can describe the latest release from Contemporary Country sensation Chris LeDoux for you with just one word... Outstanding!

It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that's exactly what I must say about this one. Grateful Dead ~ Rubin and Cherise, Orlando 4-7-91 Video Clips. Duration : 8.52 Mins.

Arguably the best of the 4 times the Dead ever played this tune, and only in 1991. Home video footage mixed with a higher quality soundboard audio source. Cherise was brushing her long hair gently down It was the afternoon of carnival as she brushes it gently down Rubin was strumming his painted mandolin It was inlaid with a pretty face in jade played in the carnival parade Cherise was dressing as Pirouette in white When a fatal vision gripped her tight Cherise beware tonight Rubin, Rubin tell me truly true I feel afraid and I don't know why I do, Is there another girl for you? If you could see my heart you would know it's true There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you I'd swear to it on my very soul, If I lie, may I fall down cold When Rubin played on his painted mandolin The breeze would pause to listen in before going on its way again Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke Like waves against the bandstand, dancers broke to the painted mandolin Looking out to the crowd who is standing there Sweet Ruby Claire at Rubin stared, at Rubin stared She was dressed as Pirouette in red And her hair hung gently down The crowd pressed round, Ruby stood as though alone Rubin's song took on a different tone and he played it just for her The song he played was the carnival parade Each note cut a thread of Cherise's fate it cut through like a blade Rubin was playing his painted mandolin When Ruby froze and turned to stone for the strings played all alone The voice of ...

Pink Martini - Over The Valley

Pink Martini - Over The Valley Video Clips. Duration : 5.33 Mins.

3 for Pink Martini are 3 music videos in a short film style format created for the Pink Martini Music Video Contest that honor my personal connection to their music as it relates to family and community and the themes of love and loss. Animation artist Rocky Kev from the KoAloha Ukulele Story teamed up with me once more to create something that is out of the box and very personal exploring our connections to Où Est Ma Tête?, Ohayoo Ohio (Hello Ohio), and Over the Valley from their new album Splendor in the Grass. We did something unique with this process since we were able to present more than one music video. We each created a music video in our own disciplines on our own and then collaborated on one final music video together (Over the Valley). I hope the films can explore the multiple layers of Pink Martini in a manner that you have not seen before and hopefully captures the spirit of what Pink Martini's musical message has always represented to me. In a very strange and special way, this music video contest has given me a chance to do something I've always wanted to do for a very long time and that is to create a film about a group that continues to inspire and bring people together across generations and across all boundaries. To Thomas M Lauderdale, China Forbes, and the talented core artists of Pink Martini I raise a martini glass to you and say, "Salud!" I hope these films are a small personal thank you for the music you've given me. With every good wish, Gary San ...

Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore

Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore Video Clips. Duration : 5.93 Mins.

Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in 1968 by Jimmy Page (guitar), Robert Plant (vocals), John Paul Jones (bass guitar, keyboards, mandolin) and John Bonham (drums). With their heavy, guitar-driven sound, Led Zeppelin are regarded as one of the first heavy metal bands, helping to pioneer the genre. However, the band's individualistic style drew from many sources and transcends any one genre. Their rock-infused interpretation of the blues and folk genres also incorporated rockabilly, reggae, soul, funk, classical, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, pop, Latin and country. The band did not release the popular songs from their albums as singles in the UK, as they preferred to develop the concept of "album-oriented rock". They charted ten singles in the US. Close to 30 years after disbanding following Bonham's death in 1980, the band continues to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band has sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide, including 111.5 million certified units in the United States and they have had all of their original studio albums reach the top 10 of the Billboard album chart in the US, with six reaching the number one spot. Led Zeppelin are ranked #1 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as "the heaviest band of all time", "the biggest band of the '70s" and "unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history ...

Dehydrating Sweet Potatoes

Have you noticed lately the price of fresh sweet potatoes have been dropping? When the cost of produce takes a nose dive I believe it is time to start stock up on that vegetable for winter use. As of this writing, the cost of a bushel of sweet's in my area is on the order of .00. Not too bad of a price all considering how much you pay if bought in your local grocery store. A comparison with my local Wal-Mart places those costs at around .89 cents per pound or about dollars per bushel in the grocery store.

On the average you can estimate that two pounds of potatoes will equal approximately four servings therefore since a bushel is about 50 pounds we will be creating 100 servings of powdered vegetable.

I like to make sweet potato powder using the dehydrator. By using the powder rather than slicing the potatoes, I find that they rehydrate much quicker when using boiling water. This is an excellent method for creating "instant" mashed sweet potatoes.

To start the process take and peel your potatoes into 1/8th inch slices and cook them for about 45 minutes. At this point you could leave them in slices or you could cut the potatoes into small cubes. I generally use a mandolin for this process in order to achieve uniform thicknesses. I like to drain them and mash as you would regular white potatoes. Keep in mind that you do not want to add any spices, salts or fats such as butter to these potatoes which you plan to dehydrate. If you would like you could alternately bake them in your oven on 350 degrees for 45 minutes and finally mash them up, the choice is entirely yours.

If you decided to slice them in slices, sticks, or cubes arrange your slices on a single layer dehydrator tray. In that case, dry them at 135 degrees until they become hard and brittle. This should take about 12 to 18 hours. Stir them occasionally and rotate the trays once or twice during the process. Since I am making powder, I will mash the sweet potatoes and spread them on a plastic-wrapped tray in 1 cup portions. Be sure to spread them as thin as you can. Usually it would be 1 cup per tray.

Set your dehydrator for 135 degrees and as soon as the top of the sweet potatoes are dry they can be removed from the sheets and turned over to dry the underside. When they become crispy they are ready to be removed from the dehydrator. Crumble them up and place small amounts of the product in your blender or food processor to create a powder.

To rehydrate your powder, slowly add hot water until it reaches the thickness of mashed potato. To store your powder place it in a mason jar along with an oxygen absorber to remove the air. As long as no air is permitted inside the Mason jar your sweet potato powder should last for years.

This powder can be used for mashed sweet potatoes, sweet potato biscuits as well as an excellent source of potatoes for sweet potato pies. Use it anywhere you would normally use sweet potatoes by cooking it in equal amounts of boiling water for 35 minutes. One cup of powder will yield about 1-1/2 cups of cooked product. To top off our article here is a recipe for orange glazed sweet potatoes.

Ingredients

3 cups of boiling water
3 cups of dehydrated sweet potato powder
2/3 cups of granulated sugar
1 tablespoons of cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of grated dried orange peel
1 cup of orange juice
2 tablespoons of butter

In a sauce pan pour the boiling water over the powdered mix. Cover the pan and cook for 35 minutes over a very low heat. Now combine the sugar, cornstarch and salt together and after mixing add the grated orange peel. Slowly add the orange juice being sure to stir it continually. Continue to cook over a low heat until it starts to thicken. Finally, add the butter and boil for one extra minute. In a casserole dish place the cooked sweet potatoes and pour this mixture over it. Cover the dish and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 1 hour. This recipe will serve 6 people.

Guitar Practice - 5 Super Simple Detuned Guitar Techniques

Along with learning how to play your guitar in what is known as standard tuning, E A D G B E. You can also change the pitch on your guitar strings by moving your strings up or down from the standard tuning on your instrument.

Get ready for another adventure on your guitar. When you enter the world of detuning your instrument, you have opened up yet another Pandora's box on your six string.

Lets take a look at 5 super simple techniques to follow when playing a detuned six string.

1. Practice: You will most definitely need to practice what you are going to play on your detuned instrument before you play live anywhere. When you detune your six string you pretty much are creating a new instrument to play on. If you are finding it difficult to play chords or scales on your detuned guitar, you may want to try a different detuned guitar variation, or learn some more chords and scales on a regularly tuned guitar. Once you've got a better grasp of chords and scales, go back to the desired tuning on your instrument that you want to learn on, and you'll find it much easier to adapt to your detuned instrument.

2. Practice single note playing: Try to find single note patterns or shapes on your detuned guitar. Chances are you will be unable to use the standard scales that you have learned on your regularly tuned instrument, and so, be ready to expand your playing abilities for some new crazy scale shapes. It's also fun to play your regular scales on your detuned instrument. Who knows, you might find a note pattern that sounds really cool, and create a new song based on this new note pattern.

3. Practice Chords: You are bound to end up with different chord shapes than what you are used to playing as regular chords. Try playing your regular tuned guitar shapes on your detuned guitar and see what your chord shapes sound like. You may need to manoeuvre your fingering around in order to play standard sounding chords. One neat thing that can happen on some detuned guitars is that you can get a nice natural chorus type sound on your guitar. This occurs due to two strings or more being played at the same time. It's kind of the same effect you get when playing a 12 string guitar.

4. Detune Slowly: When you are detuning your guitar, or, retuning your instrument to standard tuning, make sure that you turn your tuning pegs slowly. If you tune to fast you can very easily snap a string due to the changing tension on the guitar neck and string. Be extra cautious if you are also tuning up. The higher you tune up the more tense the string becomes. This of course can lead to your guitar sting breaking.

5. Try other stringed instruments: It's interesting to try out other stringed guitar like instruments such as the mandolin after you have learned how to adapt to a detuned guitar. When you begin playing other stringed instruments, try to figure out some chords and scale patterns and have fun playing similar yet different patterns and techniques on these other stringed instruments.
